Acceleration of Bluff Body Calculation Using Mdgrape-2

Bluff body calculation was accelerated by using a special-purpose computer, MDGRAPE-2, that was exclusively designed for molecular dynamics simulations. The three main issues were solved regarding the implementation of the MDGRAPE-2 on vortex methods. These issues were the efficient calculation of the Biot-Savart and stretching equation, the optimization of the table domain, and the round-off e...

EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF DRAG REDUCTION ON AHMED MODEL USING A COMBINATION OF ACTIVE FLOW CONTROL METHODS

Aerodynamic drag is an important factor in vehicles fuel consumption. Pressure drag which is the main component of total drag is a result of boundary layer separation from vehicle surface. Flow control methods are applied to avoid or at least delay separation. Depending upon whether these methods consume energy to control the flow or not, they are called active or passive control methods. In th...

Stochastic modelling and feedback control of bistability in a turbulent bluff body wake

A specific feature of three-dimensional bluff body wakes, flow bistability, is a subject of particular recent interest. This feature consists of a random flipping of the wake between two asymmetric configurations and is believed to contribute to the pressure drag of many bluff bodies. In this study we apply the modelling approach recently suggested for axisymmetric bodies by Rigas et al. (J. Fl...

Smart morphable surfaces for aerodynamic drag control.

Smart Morphable Surfaces enable switchable and tunable aerodynamic drag reduction of bluff bodies. Their topography, resembling the morphology of golf balls, can be custom-generated through a wrinkling instability on a curved surface. Pneumatic actuation of these patterns results in the control of the drag coefficient of spherical samples by up to a factor of two, over a range of flow conditions.

Analysis of a Passive Flow Control Device via Flow Visualization Techniques

This report details an experiment done to verify the effectiveness of a passive flow control system on a two-dimensional bluff body, blunt trailing edge model in controlling wake dimension and Karman vortex sheds. An earlier experiment by Park, et.al. [1] performed analysis via wind tunnel pressure testing and computerized model to determine the ideal proportions of such a tab design and identi...
